Step into the aromatic legacy of classical Arabia with Zabad (زبد), the legendary fragrant paste. Far more than a perfume, this exquisite unguent was a symbol of luxury and intimacy, meticulously crafted from civet, rich balsams, and invigorating spices.

Product Description

Zabad, a fragrant paste deeply rooted in classical Arabian culture, represents a sophisticated pinnacle of ancient perfumery. Its definition evolved from the literal translation of “civet” to encompass a complex “perfume type,” highlighting the ingenuity of Arab perfumers in transforming a potent raw material into a refined aromatic blend. The composition of Zabad extended far beyond civet, incorporating a rich ensemble of resins (such as frankincense, myrrh, amber, and ambergris), spices and herbs (including camphor, spearmint, patchouli, cedar, saffron, cinnamon, cloves, and onycha), and various fatty carriers. This diverse ingredient profile allowed for the creation of multi-layered fragrances with animalic, balsamic, fresh, woody, and earthy notes.

The crafting of Zabad involved intricate, multi-stage processes that demanded considerable skill and patience. Techniques such as infusion and maceration were fundamental, allowing aromatic elements to deeply integrate into the civet base. A particularly distinctive method was fumigation, where the paste was repeatedly exposed to the smoke of fragrant woods and resins, a unique form of sensory engineering that infused a specific smoky character into the product. Crucially, Zabad underwent prolonged aging, often for decades, to allow its complex aromas to mellow and harmonize, underscoring the artisanal dedication to achieving olfactory perfection.

The multifaceted role of Zabad in Arabian society extended beyond mere personal adornment. It served as a versatile grooming aid for hair and body, a traditional medicinal remedy for ailments like headaches, and held profound cultural and spiritual significance as an aphrodisiac, a protective charm against the evil eye, and a valuable component of dowries. This holistic functionality demonstrates that Zabad was deeply integrated into the daily life, health practices, and social customs of classical Arabian communities. Its precious nature and economical application further solidified its status as a luxury item and a symbol of intimacy and wealth.

I recreated this formula to revive this now nearly lost tradition. At the completion of this solid fragrance, I can appreciate why it was so valuable. It requires a lot of love and skillful toil, especially to get the civet from a faecal animalic beast to a tamed beauty. The classical methods of preparing these rare ingredients never cease to amaze me. Turning the pungent, faecal civet paste into a beautiful full rose. Then adding ingredients one by one, and curing after each before the next is added. Indeed it was a long process and one well worth the time. Worthy of a wedding gift, worthy for the journey of companionship. Zabad by Al Shareef.
