Al Nadd Designed as a celebration of heritage, refinement, and rare natural treasures, Al Nadd is more than an incense it is an immersive sensory luxury.
In classical Islamic history Al Nadd represents one of the most celebrated, luxury fragrant compounds ever created. Highly prized alongside Al Ghāliyah (the premier liquid perfume oil), Al-Nadd held the highest status among solid, paste-based aromatics and incense formulations across the medieval Middle East.
After hearing everything from a rose oudh blend, to cheap knock offs being called Ghāliyah, I knew that it is time now to bring forth another treasure from the past, hoping that people respect the prestige legacy of these gems and no rush to them just to copy their names.
So what is Al Nadd?
Unlike raw incense woods that were burned in their natural state, Al Nadd was an artisanally compounded, solid aromatic dough or paste. Crafted by the perfumer of the Amirs to the specific taste of the Amir. It relied on a precise blend of rare, heat-active base elements and fixatives:
Oudh; The primary structural foundation, ground into fine powder.
Musk; Extracted from the musk deer, providing warmth, depth, and fixing power.
Ambergris; Sourced from the ocean, adding a rich, sweet, and animalic marine tone.
Whilst these three were the primary foundations pillars for Al Nadd, other ingredients were added for harmonising and bringing the composition together.
Why was Al Nadd Significant?
The composition of Al Nadd reached its analytical peak during the 9th and 10th centuries. In his seminal work Kitāb Kīmiyāʾ al-ʿIṭr wa-al-Taṣʿīdāt (The Book of the Chemistry of Perfume and Distillations), the philosopher-chemist Al Kindī documented complex formulations for preparing Al Nadd.
Similarly, the physician Abū Zayd al-Balkhī and later Abū al-Qāsim al-Zahrāwī (Abulcasis) included prescriptions for Al Nadd, viewing it through the lens of humoral balance. “Hot” aromatics like musk and agarwood were compounded to stimulate the brain and vital spirit (rūḥ), counterbalancing cold humors.
What the Royal Courts demanded
In urban hubs like Baghdad, Cordoba, and Damascus, Al Nadd was an indispensable signifier of elite status and etiquette. Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Washshāʾ (d. 937 CE), in his social etiquette guide Kitāb al-Muwashshā, noted that members of polite society favored Al Nadd and Al Ghāliyah as the pinnacle of personal refinement.
Al Nadd was typically used in two ways:
As Incense: Warmed over glowing charcoal in a censer (mabkhara), scenting robes and reception halls.
As a Solid Perfume: Worn on the body in small metal or carved containers to slowly release fragrance with body heat.
Today we present you the modern take on this most amazing perfume expression. Both Al Nadd Bakhoor form, and Al Nadd the oil form. Here is your chance to experience the opulence of the Amirs and Sultans of the past.

OUDH FACTS
When used in a perfume composition, Oud is most often a base note, which tends to remain on the skin long after the others dissipate. Since they form the perfume’s foundation, base notes are very rich, heavy and long-lasting (up to six hours and more). They serve to enhance the scent of other ingredients; and, in some cases, they impart a fragrance all their own. While most wood notes are known for their earthy qualities, Oud provides a pleasant sweet scent and is often featured in a synthetic version because it is so costly to harvest.
